​PowerGrid™ components

Intelligent grid storage system in a container.

The PowerGrid™ 20C1600K container contains:

  • 64 PowerPacks, each containing 48 high capacity LFP cells in series and a Pack Controller (BMU).
  • arranged in 8 stacks (also called strings) in parallel, each with 8 PowerPacks in series and a Stack Controller (CMU).
  • Temperature control system with liquid cooling or heating for each PowerPack.
  • 8 customized Power Conversion Systems (PCS) to convert each stack power to AC requirements from grid operator or to DC requirements for solar power hybrid systems.
  • Complete firefighting system.
  • Auxiliary power system.
  • Storage Module Controller (GPC) to control and monitor all stacks and PowerPacks and monitor safety and store online statistical data for cells, battery packs and stacks.
  • Energy Management Controller (EMC) to control inverters, grid connections, and provide standard interfaces to grid operator energy trading platform or to our GridControl real time distributed cloud energy storage platform.

Independent Inverters

​Independent PCS for each battery stack allows variable DC voltage profiles to maintain optimum charge and discharge status of each battery stack over time. Can prevent capacity loss caused by cross current and increase lifetime discharge capacity.

Over time, charge and discharge performance of parallel battery stacks will vary due to divergences in the internal resistance of the cells. Tests have shown that:

  • the capacity loss increases by up to 2 % per year when eight racks are connected in parallel compared to non-parallel connections. 

  • when two battery stacks are connected in parallel and the SOC differs by 8%, after a complete charge-discharge cycle, the total discharge capacity of the energy storage system with independent PCS inverters (or floating DC-DC controllers) is increased by up to 7%.

Battery stacks with new and old battery packs can be combined, allowing them to be replaced and extended. Independent stack inverters also add to the ESS reliability and availability as stacks can operate fully independently.

3 level Control Architecture

  1. Battery pack monitoring unit (BMU) cell balancing and monitoring ensures optimum cycle life and safety for each cell in a PowerPack.

  2. Stack Controller (CMU) in each battery stack for independent stack monitoring.

  3. Intelligent Storage Module Controller (SMC) for cabinet monitoring and safety with separate Energy Management Controller (EMC) to monitor and control PCS for energy trading or Frequency Reserve applications.

  • FOUR units of 20C1600K BESS containers each with 8 independent battery stacks with dedicated Inverters. 
  • ONE unit of 20CMV6400K MV container with a 6400 kVA transformer and LV and MV switchgear and metering. 
  • ONE unit of BESS subsystem control cabinet with networking and PLC controller for EMS FR services.
  • All power and data cable for the subsystem to the MV container and control cabinet.
